CINAHL Subject Headings is adapted from MeSH, the National Library of Medicine's controlled vocabulary thesaurus of medical subject terms, or "headings," arranged in a hierarchical structure that permits searching at various levels of specificity.

CINAHL Subject Headings are arranged in a hierarchy, or "tree structure," that permits searching at various levels of detail from the most general level to more narrow levels to find the most precise terms. The subject headings include indexing annotations, scope notes, entry vocabulary, history notes, and allowable subheadings. The subject headings can be exploded to retrieve all references indexed to that term as well as all references indexed to any narrower term(s). Searches can also be limited with specific qualifiers (subheadings) to improve the precision of the search, and limited to major subject headings, which indicate the main focus of an article.

Other Databases with Medical Journals

To search for books using the library catalog, start with a keyword search by adding the keyword in the search box. Be sure to have Isothermal Community College Library as the selected library to search. Click the search box. Once you have located an item of interest, select the item by clicking on the title of the item. On the screen that appears next, you will have options to view more details of the item, place the item on hold, shelf browse to look at other items related to the chosen item, and other features relevant to your search.

If you are unable to find the desired item, you can request an interlibrary loan (ILL). Check the Interlibrary Loan page for details.

Video can communicate a large amount of information in a short period of time. This can be used to great effect if you have to give a timed presentation.

Some of the library databases provide short videos, video segments, or clips that get straight to the point. All of the databases provide direct links to their videos, and some, even provide embed code so you can play the video within a web page or presentation.

If you cannot use a video clip you can still incorporate content from a video into your paper or presentation. You can take notes about the content and include those ideas in your research. Some video databases also include transcripts of the video, which can make quoting as simple as copy and paste.

And remember, whether you use a clip, or quote from an transcript, or just make reference to the content of a video you still need to cite your source. See our page on citation for more help.
