Humanities 130 - Myth and Human Culture: Assignment 1 - Vampire History

Course guide for Humanities 130: Myth and Human Culture.

Assignment 1 - Vampire History

Step 1: What are "the Balkans"?:

Objective:

Students will provide a brief (1 paragraph) definition for "the Balkans."

Directions:

In a single paragraph, provide a definition for "the Balkans."

Introduction: In the study of vampires, either as figures in art or as part of local mythology, many scholars will locate the monsters’ origins in the Balkans. Before we can begin to understand the history of vampires, then, we need a basic understanding of what the term “The Balkans” means. Is it a group of countries? If so, which ones? Are they united by anything other than geography? Why do we look at this specific collection of countries as a group?

Step 2: The Balkans and the Vampire

Objective:

Students will be able to articulate the relationship between the vampire and the Balkans. They will explore how that create relates to the history and culture of the Balkan countries.

Directions:

In a short essay (1-2 pages), please explain the history of the vampire as it relates to the Balkan countries. While it is understood that your answer will not be comprehensive, what figures, events, or countries are most important to understanding the history of the vampire? Some questions you may want to consider:

  • Where does the term “vampire” come from?
  • Who is considered the first vampire?
  • Are there any historical figures or moments that help shape the vampire mythology in these countries?
